 Free Income Tax Preparation for Low and Moderate Income Persons

This year the AARP Tax Aide Program will provide income tax assistance and preparation for low and moderate income persons at Lorraine Gleick Nordgren Senior Center. Preparation is by appointment only. We will have appointments on Mondays during tax season starting on February 8th from 9:00am-1:00pm. Call 508-832-7799 to schedule an appointment with a volunteer tax assistor.

Alzheimer’s/Dementia presentation for Families and Caregivers

Wednesday, January 13th at 6pm Jadranka Grek, the Alzheimer’s/Dementia instructor/trainer, will do a 60 minute presentation plus 30 minutes for questions and answers. Jadranka is the Program Manager of St. Camillus Health Center in Whitinsville Memory Care Neighborhood and provides dementia training for all of St. Camillus employees. This presentation covers the following topics:
• Overview of the disease and what happens to the brain in different types of dementia.
• Better understanding of “their world” and how to improve non-verbal communication once verbal communication is gone.
• Better understanding of symptoms such as wandering, aggression, paranoia, and how to avoid behavior issues connected with these symptoms.
• The importance of creating a therapeutic environment.
• Practical tips for caregivers to use during daily care in order to avoid or minimize behavior issues.

Stop in any Wednesday between 11:00 & 12:00 and we’ll make your computer behave The Tech Clinic has gotten off to a great start. We’ve had good discussions and answered lots of questions. The Clinic is your chance to ask anything at all about tech you use (or try to use) in your daily life. If you’re having trouble with email, or questions about that “new fangled” smartphone – bring it in and we will work with you to solve the issue or just make it work better for you. Is your laptop running slower than you think it should? Bring it in. I can run some simple diagnostics on it while you wait to see what’s going on.

Town Clerk Services Offered at the Auburn Senior Center

Services of the Town Clerk’s office are offered the third Thursday of each month at 11:00am -12:00pm. Notary service, voter registrations etc, dog registrations or anything that we can do to help. The notary fee is $1.00 per signature.

Do you know about the Senior Center Library?

We have many books at the Senior Center in the lending library located off the Goddard Room. There are a variety of books both regular and large print, fiction and nonfiction. Borrow what you would like and bring it back when you are done. There are also many DVD’s available to borrow.

Senator Michael Moore’s Office Hour

Senator Michael Moore’s representative will hold office hours at the Auburn Senior Center on Monday, January 25th from 9:00 til 10:00am. Please stop by with your questions or compliments.

A New Year, a New YOU! The New Year is a perfect time of year to focus on your health. We have a variety of exercise classes at the Auburn Senior Center to help you with your New Year’s resolution. We will be offering our exercise classes FREE for one week to encourage people to try something new.

During the week of Monday, January 11th – Friday, January 15th try as many classes as you like for free! (There is not line dancing class during that week):

Muscle Building Class – Mondays from 1:00pm Muscle Building is a seated class taught with tubing (bands) that incorporates stomach exercises, leg exercises and hand exercises. The class also includes balance cardio and a brief intro to urine control. This class is both for the active and sedentary lifestyles and is taught by Charlene Harper, Master Trainer, Course Writer & Health Educator. This is drop in class, you do not need to pre-register, $3 per class. You do not need to attend every class.

Yoga – Tuesdays at 9:00am You can start yoga practice at any age to improve overall health and wellbeing guided from an experienced teacher to give appropriate modifications to adjust for physical changes throughout our life. Senior Yoga is practiced with the use of a chair and incorporates breathing practices (Pranayama), focus (Meditation) and movement (Asana). Ann Ramsey is a certified registered yoga teacher of the E-RYT 500 level and has been teaching yoga to seniors for 10 years. $3 per class.

Strength & Balance Workout – Thursdays at 10:00am Strengthen & tone your upper and lower body while improving your mobility & balance with these seated and standing exercises using a chair & light hand weights (if desired). Led by Ace Certified Fitness Trainer Lin Hultgren. All levels are welcome! Beginner and modification friendly. Make a positive difference in your health today! This is drop in class, you do not need to pre-register, $3 per class.

Line Dancing – Wednesdays at 10:00am Traditional line dancing; fox trot, waltz, rumba, and cha cha. Footwork is broken down for easy learning and cued while dancing. Line dancing can be good cardiovascular exercise and help improve coordination while having lots of fun. Taught by Helene Hanam. $3 per class.

Pedaling Exercise Class – Fridays at 10:00am Auburn Visiting Nurses run this low impact pedaling class for arms and legs. Participants remain seated while exercising upper and lower extremities. It is a cardiovascular workout even if you have balance issues. You can make modifications in tension, distance and time. This class can work to strengthen your arms, legs, neck, and shoulders and improve heart health.
