Most Auburn residents are already aware of the realignment of Auburn’s elementary schools, prompted by the opening of the new Middle School at 9 West St. One of the many changes going on behind the scenes is the merger of the former District 1 and District 2 PTOs.

According to Raffi Vartabedian, PTO Co-Chair, “With Pakachoag and Julia Bancroft combining at Swanson Rd. Intermediate, it made sense to look at combining the two PTOs.” That’s exactly what they did.

At tonight’s School Committee meeting, the new PTO officers and representatives will provide an update on the PTO’s reorganization, including some of the upcoming fundraising events.  According to Vartabedian, “Dr. Brunelle [Dr. Maryellen Brunelle, Auburn Public Schools Superintendent] was a big proponent of the merge. We’re happy to present the group’s progress.”

The new officers of the PTO are Kristina Nashold, Co-Chair; Raffi Vartabedian, Co-Chair; Debra Dorval, Treasurer; Gillian Kies, Secretary; Nicole Johnson, Bryn Mawr Elementary School Representative; Jennifer Maurello, Pakachoag Elementary School Representative; Claire Swenson, Swanson Road Intermediate School 3rd Grade Representative; Amy Castellano, Swanson Road Intermediate School 4th Grade Representative; Becca Schultz, Swanson Road Intermediate School 5th Grade Representative.

The combined group will continue some of the popular traditional PTO events, such as the annual Holiday Auction (Nov. 13 at J. Anthony’s), the sweetheart dances, and the mother-son dances. They also have some new events on the agenda.

“We’ll be holding a Harlem Wizards versus Auburn personalities basketball night on April 11, 2016 at AHS” said Vartabedian. “It should be a great, fun show.”

For the coming weeks, the PTO has organized a number of dining out fundraisers at Coco’s, McDonald’s, Papa Gino’s and 99 Restaurant. There is also a BINGO night on September 11.  See the full list of events at the bottom of the page, or download the PTO Back to School Flyer.

In addition to sponsoring the sweetheart dances and other school events, the PTO uses the funds raised to provide education opportunities in and out of the classroom, such as field trips.  Teachers can also ask the PTO to sponsor specific classroom supplies, projects or equipment, says Vartabedian.

Membership in the PTO is open to any parent, or caregiver of children in pre-K through grade 5. The next meeting is September 14 at 6:30pm, and thereafter on the first Monday of the month at Swanson Rd. Elementary starting at 6:30pm.
