In 2010, Congress voted unanimously in favor of supporting ‘National Spirit of 45 Day’.  This commemoration occurs on the second Sunday of every August, coinciding with the anniversary of August 11, 1949, the historic day when President Harry S. Truman announced that World War II was over.  America took on the responsibility for rebuilding the postwar world in an unprecedented effort to assure a better future for both its allies and former enemies alike.

National Spirit of 45 Day provides an opportunity for America to say “Thank You” to those who served in uniform and those who supported them on the home front; the men and women who were the “ordinary heroes” of the WWII generation who are now passing away at an estimated rate of one every 90 seconds. It is also a time to honor the memory of the more than 400,000 Americans who made the ultimate sacrifice and never came home.

By remembering and reflecting upon the achievements of the generation that endured the difficult times of the Great Depression, defended freedom in WWII, and then went on to assure a better future for their children and the children’s children, Americans of all ages can come together to renew our national spirit so that we can meet the historic challenges of our own time. It is important to engage the youth of America in an ongoing dialogue about what they can do to assure that they are able to contribute to making the world a better place in their lifetime.

Our town will be thanking our WWII vets on Sunday August 16, from 1pm to 4pm. The event will be held at the Chester P. Tuttle Post 279 of the American Legion, at 88 Bancroft St., Auburn.

There will be an opening ceremony, guest speakers, a reading of local Proclamations and Resolutions, musical entertainment from the 40’s, a wreath laying, food, individual awards for all WWII vets, military vehicles from the period and a great time.

The event is free and open to the public, though donations are graciously accepted before and at the event. For more information contact Steve Gallant at 508-832-3664 or June Ganley at 508-499-8850.
