Dear Parents, Students and the Citizens of Auburn,

Today I write to you with a short story and a bit of useful information after a long, productive summer.

I was visiting my “rents” the other day; my mom asked me “What’s New?” As parents they continue to ask me, “What did you do in school today?” EVERYTHING! I answered. All is new, an unbelievable school loaded with the latest technology, 1:1 iPads, doc cameras, Epson SMART boards, state of the art technology everywhere. My dad asked how will you get the word out. Good question I responded, e-mail, voice mail, Auburn Dailey, One Calls, and this letter I am going to write to our students and families.

As there is so much information to disseminate I thought I would start with the basics….Welcome to the “NEW” Auburn Middle School!

Frequently asked questions

How will the middle school communicate with parents and students?

Most communication will be done through Gmail for individual communications. When the middle school wants to notify the entire student body we will utilize the One Call Now system. In order for the system to work we need a phone number and an e-mail. All of our faculty have e-mails listed on the staff directory on our main page, left side blue button. Yes, we also make direct phone calls as needed. You can call or e-mail me directly at 508-832-7722 or jgagnon@auburn.k12.ma.us.

What is The Scholars Choice?

The Scholars Choice, or TSC, is our student data base and web-site supporter. All “live” grades, attendance, progress and report card grades, and schedules can be accessed on line by you and your student. You will need to follow a simple sign-up to gain access. Again please see our web-page.

What are the school hours?

Our school hours are 7:45 am-2:15 pm. Many of our students stay after school for extra help, sports, and various clubs. See the attached flyer.

What does the drop-off route look like?

Cars follow the incoming one-way traffic for cars only (just like NASCAR-turn left). Buses have two-way traffic rights in/out.

Where can I get a bus pass for my student?

Bus passes are issued at 5 West Street. Notices were sent out last spring. You can also look on the main web-site for more information.

Will students have a Homeroom?

Yes. Students will be assigned a homeroom or a home base. We will not have homeroom that often as attendance will be taken in the student’s Block I class. We will utilize homeroom for iPad deployment, report card distribution and other special events.

Where can my student see their schedules?

Monday, August 31st Grade 6 3:00-4:00 PM, Grade 7 4:00-5:00 PM, Grade 8 5:00-6:00 PM students can pick up their schedules at AMS. We will also be distributing schedules in homeroom the first day of school.

Please explain this schedule that rotates.

Think six days by six rotating blocks. The blocks start with a Day One, Block One through six, a Day Two starts with block two and rotates through. Please see our Web-page.

When will Curriculum Nights be scheduled?

Grade 6 Tuesday, October 6th 6-7:30 PM
Grade 7 Wednesday, October 7th 6-7:30 PM
Grade 8 Thursday October 8th 6-7:30 PM

Will my student be issued a locker and a lock?

New lockers that are wide enough to accommodate a backpack and a new combination lock will be issued. R-L-R

How do I gain entrance for a meeting at the middle school?

Due to safety and security, ALL parents and visitors must check in at the main office before conducting school business. Parents visiting the school or volunteering in the school during the school day need to report to our front office secretary. Please note it is the Auburn Public Schools policy that a picture ID is required of all visitors. The secretary will issue you a “visitor’s badge” after signing in, and presenting your ID. This ID must be left in the office for the duration of the visit. When leaving the building, please report back to the office, return the visitor’s badge, and sign out. At this time your ID will be returned. It is important to note that all parent volunteers need to have a current CORI check on file to volunteer in any capacity in our school. This is state law and a mandatory requirement. All CORI forms can be filled out at the Superintendant’s Office located at 5 West Street.

What is a Blue Card, who needs one and what do I need to do?

Just a reminder that the athletic departments BLUE CARD is the ticket to try-outs and practice. All information must be completed. These cards can be picked up in the nurse’s office at Auburn Middle School. GO ROCKETS!

If your student wishes to participate in school sports, the student must complete a blue card. The blue card reviews basic information on the student as well as the concussion history and policy. The parent and student complete the blue card and submit it to the school nurse for review. The most recent physical examination by the student’s physician should accompany the blue card. Physical examinations are valid for thirteen months.

State Concussion Law
Just a reminder that Massachusetts is dealing with new guidelines in reference to concussion management. By signing the BLUE CARD parents are stating that they have visited the MIAA website (www.miaa.net) and have familiarized themselves with these new guidelines
