The Auburn Community Players will be performing Disney’s The Little Mermaid, Jr. tonight at the Pappas Recreation Complex. The performance begins at 6pm. The show is part of the Summer in the Park concert series.
The ACP Summer Theater Program ran from on July 6 to July 18, and features over 40 cast and crew. The ACP cast presented three sold out performances of the play at Pakachoag Church on July 17 and 18. The demand to see the performance, and the limited seating at Pakachoag, gave ACP executive director Christine Taylor the idea to perform the show outdoors at Pappas where seating would not be an issue.
The performers – most of the performers anyway – are between 10 and 14 years old. Ashley Deneault, a newcomer to the ACP program, landed the role of Ariel after dazzling the staff with her voice. John Nichols, who played Willy Wonka in last year’s performance of Willy Wonka and the chocolate Factory, is back, this time as Prince Eric, and he pretty well nails it. The ever popular crab Sebastian is played by now-veteran performer, Patric Cambell. This year’s participants hail from 9 communities, including Auburn, Worcester, Holden, Sutton, Paxton, Charlton, Shrewsbury, Southbridge, and Northbridge.
The Little Mermaid, Jr., is an adaptation of the Broadway show by the same name (sans the ‘Junior’), designed for younger performers. The musical adds some additional songs that were not in the famously popular Disney movie from 1989. But, of course, it does also feature classic favorites like ‘Kiss the Girl’, ‘Under the Sea’, and ‘Le Poisson’.
