Special to AMD
For 16 years, Liz and Bill Gribbons have coordinated the First Day Program to provide much-needed assistance to Auburn school children. This year is no different, and the 2015 appeal is on. The Gribbons have provided the following information outlining the needs for this year’s appeal. Please consider helping in any way you can:
For the 17th year we are honored to support the children of Auburn by coordinating the First Day Program. Our mission has remained remarkably consistent over the years – “provide deserving children in our community back to school supplies and clothing.” Over the past sixteen years, hundreds of children have benefited from the generosity of a caring Auburn community. We expect the need to remain high this year with many families continuing to struggle and with price increases for clothing and an ever-expanding list of school supplies children must bring with them the first day of school.
As we have throughout the years, we will work with Auburn Youth and Family Services to distribute collected items to the children. We anticipate more than 60 children will require our assistance. With the help of individuals, church groups, civic organizations, and local businesses, we will once again meet this challenge. If you would like to help out, please contact us at the number listed below.
Most importantly, we are in need of gift certificates from Old Navy or gift cards in any denomination. We also need the following supplies: ½, 1 and 2 inch three ring binders, two-pocket folders, three subject notebooks, ruled index cards, set of five notebook dividers, colored pencils, ear buds, erasers, glue sticks, highlighters, ruled notebook paper (reinforced holes) jumbo book covers, pencil pouches, pencil sharpeners, pencils, pens (blue and black), post-it notes, red pocket folders, sturdy back packs for middle school students.
As you can see, the list of supplies needed by our children grows with each passing year. Students starting the school year without these supplies are placed at a serious disadvantage.
To help us effectively manage the supply inventory and minimize duplication; please call us at 508.832.9879 before purchasing supplies. Our goal is to distribute the clothing and supplies August 25 so please act quickly. If you would like to make a donation to the program, please make checks payable to Auburn Youth and Family Services and note First Day Program on the memo line. You can mail checks and gift cards or drop off supplies at our home, 7 Sunnyside Road, Auburn, MA 01501. With your generosity and support, we can make the first day of school a happy one for every child in our community.
We thank you for your continued assistance,
Liz and Bill Gribbons
