Marjorie (Sheldon) Pond, age 91, died on Friday, April 24, 2015, at Notre Dame Long Term Care Center in Worcester, MA. Marjorie was born in Fort Wayne, IN to Donald Gillett Sheldon and Louise (McClure) Sheldon. She was an honor student and was very active in clubs in both high school and college. She loved writing and received a BA in English from DePauw University. She was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa sorority, editor of her high school and college newspapers, and was permanent class secretary for her college class. She also did post-graduate studies for radio announcing, production and writing at Northwestern University and Columbia University. Marge worked as a continuity writer for radio station WGL in Fort Wayne, IN, and then wrote for national accounts for the Med Maxwell Radio Advertising Agency in New York City.
Marge met her future husband, Dr. Sidney M. Pond before he headed off to WWII. They corresponded for 4 years during the war, and then married after he completed his internship in New York City in 1949. They settled in Worcester, MA, where Sid was doing his residency, then moved to Auburn to raise their family and set up his medical practice. Marge helped run his office for the first few years, then became a full-time housewife raising 4 children. Marge had a very strong faith and loved to help in all kinds of church events and activities at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Auburn. Marge was active in town politics and was a Town Representative for many years. She also worked for UMass Medical Center helping to set up their Medical Records Dept. She went back to school at age 69 to take some computer courses, so she could feel comfortable using one and to keep in communication with friends and family via email. She was President of the Worcester District Medical Society Auxiliary, was active in the Auburn Women’s Club, and really enjoyed volunteering at the Auburn Visiting Nurses Association. After her husband passed away after 47 years of marriage, she moved to Orleans on Cape Cod and continued to do volunteer work at the Community of Jesus.
Marge moved into Notre Dame Long Term Care Center in May of 2007, where she spent the last 8 years and then died peacefully under the compassionate and professional care of the South Wing staff. Marge was pre-deceased by her husband, Dr. Sidney Pond in1996, by her younger brother, Judge Robert Sheldon of Michigan, and by her grandson, Andrew J. Pond of Auburn. She is survived by her four children, Stephen R. Pond and his wife Bernie of Montreal , Canada, James S. Pond of Auburn, Louise P, Kulig and her husband Jack Meagher of Lunenburg, and Robert C. Pond and his wife Robin of Webster. She is also survived by 3 grandchildren, Jeff Kulig, Ashley Pond and Stephen J. Pond.
Calling hours will be held on Wednesday April 29, 2015 from 5 to 7 PM in the Britton-Wallace Funeral Home, 91 Central Street, Auburn, MA with a prayer service to follow at 7 PM. Burial and memorial services will be at the convenience of the family in Brewster Cemetery, Brewster MA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Auburn VNA c/o VNA of Southern Worcester County, 191 Pakachoag Street, Auburn, MA 01501.
