Julia Bancroft Principal Susan Lopez has been selected to serve as the Principal of the new Swanson Road Intermediate School when it opens in September. All grade 3-5 students in Auburn will attend Swanson Road in the future when the new Auburn Middle School opens, Julia Bancroft and Mary D. Stone schools close, and grades K-2 move from Mary D. to Pakachoag School.

The only Auburn elementary school that will be the same next year is Bryn Mawr. Lopez is in her fifth year as principal of Julia Bancroft which was recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School last year.

With Swanson Road Intermediate soon to become a similar size to Auburn Middle School with 3 full grades, the plan from the start was to also appoint a vice-principal. While Pakachoag Principal Deborah Kozik was offered this position, she had already begun exploring opportunities to return to the classroom.

Fortunately, Kozik will be able to do that as a Kindergartner teacher here in Auburn. Superintendent Maryellen Brunelle told Auburn Mass Daily, “Deb is a phenomenal teacher, and both the children and her peers will benefit from her return to teaching. I am thrilled for Deb.”

Kozik became principal when Kathy Lauze moved to the central office as Assistant Superintendent of Teaching, Learning and Curriculum. The vice-principal position has been advertised and in one day has received 13 applications.

Brunelle also announced the retirement of Mary D. Stone Principal Elizabeth Chase at the conclusion of the school year. She has been in that spot for seven years and could have become the principal at Pakachoag. That position has quickly drawn 37 applicants.

Another change at the end of the fiscal year, Business Manager Howard G. Barber has tendered his resignation after accepting a similar job in Greenfield, MA. The new location is considerably closer to his family’s residence.

Superintendent Brunelle commented on all the changes, “I hold them all in the highest of regards. I give nothing but my best to all of these fine people.”
