Rockets Tops in 6 Contests

By John Anderson

On Monday afternoon, the buses rolled in from Southbridge and the Advanced Science and Math Academy in Marlborough. The trips home could not have been fun as the Rockets won 5 competitions at home as well as one on the road.

Auburn defeated Southbridge 19-1 after a 13-0 win over Millbury last week. The Pioneers had one hit and one run during their first at-bat, but that made little difference as the Rockets scored 15 in the later part of the first inning.
Freshman pitcher Julia Handfield debuted in the shut out against Millbury, and she was equally powerful on either side of the bat on Monday.

Handfield recorded 13 strikeouts over 5 innings and also had 3 hits including the game’s only homer as well as 5 RBI’s. Senior Jordan Lavallee added 3 hits and 2 RBI’s.

Boys baseball earned another win after a tight seventh inning when Southbridge scored 3 runs and narrowed the Rocket lead to 9-8, the game final. The boys are now 3-0 on the season.

Girls tennis soundly defeated Southbridge 5-0: Elizabeth Fazio (A) vs. Callie Mathieu (S) 6-4, 6-4; Micaela Almeida (A) vs. Cassie St. Germaine (S) 6-2, 6-1; Monika Mularski (A) vs. Gianna O’Brien (S) 6-0, 6-0; Kaitlyn Chestna and Allie Giaquinto (A) vs. Erika Quesada and Annie Kodjo (S) 6-2, 6-1; and Carolyn Jeffries and Ciaro O’Connor (A) vs. Mikayla O’Brien and Teagan Alicea Bailey (S): 6-0, 6-3.

On the road, boys tennis, in their season opener, also won 5-0 over the Pioneers.
