AUBURN – Elizabeth E. (Whittaker) McGovern, 83, of Amherst, N.H., formerly of Auburn, died Monday, March 30, 2015, in St. Joseph Hospital, in Nashua, N.H. after a brief illness.
She leaves three sons, Hugh M. McGovern of New York City, Terrance J. McGovern of South Yarmouth and Christopher P. McGovern of Westborough; a daughter, Elizabeth D. Yessin of Centerville; Her brother, Lee Whittaker of Franklin, N.C., three sisters, Judy Clay of Worcester, Susan Gilchrist of Whitinsville and Beverly Griffin of Leicester; and ten grandchildren.
Her husband, Hugh M. McGovern, died in 1984. Her son, (ret.) USAF Lt. Col. Francis Xavier McGovern, died in 2011. Her sister, Barbara Chase, also predeceased her.
Elizabeth was born in Auburn, daughter of Lee and Emma (Freeman) Whittaker and grew up in Worcester. She returned to Auburn, where she lived for more than 25 years, before moving to New Hampshire.
She graduated from South High School in Worcester in three years.
Elizabeth was a founding member of North American Martyrs Church in Auburn and was a hospice volunteer for many years. She also enjoyed spending time with her beloved dog, Lily.
Calling hours are Wednesday, April 1, from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., Worcester. The funeral will be Thursday, April 2, from the funeral home with a Liturgy at 11 a.m. in North American Martyrs Church, 8 Wyoma Drive, Auburn. Burial will be in St. John’s Cemetery, Worcester.
