Lorraine F. (Messier) Scheffler, formerly of Auburn, MA died Friday, January 30, 2015 at Beaumont Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation in Westborough, MA after a seven year struggle with Alzheimer’s Disease . Her loving family was gathered at her bedside. She was the beloved wife of the late Edgar L. Scheffler who died in 1996.
Lorraine was born in Auburn and lived there most of her life. Lorraine was the eldest of three children born to Elsie R. (LaPrade) Messier and Ulderic A. Messier.
She graduated from St. Peter’s High School and Salter’s Secretarial School, Worcester. Lorraine began her work career at Household Finance Corporation, Worcester, MA when she was 17 years old. She went on to work her way to first female manager in the country. Lorraine loved working at Household and continued there until her retirement.
Lorraine’s passion for helping others and her devotion to St. Joseph’s Church, Auburn, was evidenced by her combined efforts with several close friends in forming the St. Joseph’s Church Thrift Shop where she was manager for many years. Lorraine was a member and past president of the St. Joseph’s Catholic Women’s League and formed the first bereavement group at St. Joseph’s. She was presented the “Outstanding Citizen of Auburn Award” for her charitable works in the early 1990’s. Lorraine enjoyed travel, card parties, planning bus trips, painting, poetry, shopping, plays, concerts and dancing. For 15 years she managed her daughter’s dance studio while working a full time job as an office manager. Lorraine and her husband had many friends and close family members with whom they shared their passion for island vacations and Cape Cod trips.
Lorraine is survived by her daughter Suzanne M. Savage and son-in- law, Dr. Robert F. Savage of Northborough, two grandchildren whom she loved more than life, Stefanie S. Landgren and her husband Michael of Northborough and Justin R. Savage of Worcester; two great – grandchildren, Joseph R. and Julia S. Landgren of Northborough; a brother Robert A. Messier and his wife Kathleen of Worcester and is pre – deceased by a sister Claire Messier. She also leaves several brothers and sisters-in-law, her (“Webster family”) with whom she made wonderful memories and many nieces and nephews. A kind and devoted friend, Larry Frechette, predeceased her. The family would like to extend their sincerest gratitude to the caring staff at the Beaumont for the love they showed Lorraine for seven long years.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Lorraine’s family on Tuesday February 3, 2015 from 9:30-10:30 AM in the Britton-Wallace Funeral Home, 91 Central Street, Auburn. A funeral Mass in celebration of Lorraine’s life will be held at 11 AM at St. Joseph’s Church, 189 Oxford St North, Auburn. Burial will follow in Notre Dame Cemetery, Worcester. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 480 Pleasant St. Watertown, MA 02472
