The Auburn Fire Rescue Department has established an e-mail address for residents to notify them of fire hydrants that are buried so deep that they need a machine to get to them. That address is hydrants@town.auburn.ma.us.  Residents can also message the AFRD on Facebook (Aubrnmassfire) and Twitter (@auburnmassfire) and provide the location of the hydrant.

AFRD Chief Coleman said in a press release:

“We know that this is an unprecedented amount of snow and that we are running out of room to put it, but we still need the publics help to continue to shovel the over 500 hydrants in town that are in front of or near your property.

I would also like to remind the residents as well as business owners of the Mass General Law that prohibits the intentional burying of fire hydrants, which we have been dealing with quite a bit. Understanding that sometimes it cannot be helped during street clearing operations or at the clearing of intersections, but many times it can be helped and we have been dealing with people intentionally dumping and stock piling the snow on the fire hydrant.

‘M.G.L Section 27B. No person other than an employee in the service of the commonwealth or any political subdivision thereof or in the service of an independent contractor acting for the commonwealth or any such subdivision shall pile, push or plow snow or ice on or against any fire hydrant or other similar device used for fire protection which is located in any public or private way so as to conceal such hydrant or device or cover any outlet thereof. Whoever violates this section shall be punished by a fine of not more than one hundred dollars.'”

According to Coleman, Auburn will be receiving assistance from the National Guard as well as the Worcester County Sheriff’s Office in the upcoming week to assist in their continuing effort to set these fire hydrants free. He concludes, “We thank all of the residents for their continued efforts in shoveling their hydrants and helping us help you.”
