The Rocket Classic brought together 4 boys basketball teams on Monday: D1 Burncoat, D1 Leominster, D2 Westborough, and D3 Auburn. The tournament results were consistent with the MIAA alignments but not so good for Auburn.
In the first round, Burncoat beat Westborough 63-59, and Leominster defeated Auburn 75-43. In the consolation round on Tuesday, Westborough crushed Auburn 71-36 while Leominster defeated Burncoat 74-71 in the final. The consolation round looked like a competitive contest for a few minutes, but it wouldn’t last. Auburn was down 20-14 at the end of the first quarter and fell to 40-25 at the half.
The Rangers held Auburn to 3 points in the third quarter and 8 in the fourth. The final score was 71-36 in Westborough’s favor. Despite being the beneficiary of the bonus and then double bonus in the second and fourth quarters, Auburn could not gain enough from the foul line. Auburn lacks height, and facing these taller teams is unlikely to yield great results. It might be a good idea for future Classics to at least host teams in the same division since that is how the MIAA structures their tournaments.
Today’s slide show was taken from the offensive end during the first half and from the defensive end during the second. The images tell the story.
