In early September, Julia Bancroft principal, Susan Lopez, found out that JB had been selected as a National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education. The award was kept quiet until October 2, when it was announced at a school assembly.  This past Thursday, JB staff, teachers and administrators joined school committee members and other local and state dignitaries at Chuck’s Steak House in Auburn to celebrate their accomplishments.

JB is one of only 3 public and 1 private schools in Massachusetts to earn this honor. Nationally, 287 public and 50 private schools received the Blue Ribbon designation.

At Thursday’s event, Ms Lopez had tremendous praise for the JB community, as well she should.  She emphasized the extraordinary teamwork in the school and the support of the entire Auburn Public School system.  Lopez also expressed her gratitude to local businesses, Masterman’s, Chuck’s, Auburn Industrial Development Corp., Hanover Theatre, BJ’s Wholesale Club, Southbridge Savings Bank and the District I PTO for their support over the years.

Holly Hodgkins representing Congressman James McGovern offered her congratulations and announced a proclamation from Congress is forthcoming.

Doreen Goodrich, representing Sen. Michael Moore, presented a proclamation from the Massachusetts Senate.  She talked about her own experiences with Julia Bancroft, and how the school community felt like family.

Rep. Paul Frost, whose three children have attended Julia Bancroft, also spoke of the strength of the JB community, and praised the great strides JB has made in closing student achievement gaps.  Rep. Frost also brought  a proclamation from the Massachusetts Legislature.

APS Superintendent, Dr. Maryellen Brunelle talked about the work “day in and day out.”

“This achievement reflects on our whole district” said Dr. Brunelle during her comments.

At the conclusion of the remarks, attendees were treated to a cake featuring the Blue Ribbon logo.  All of the JB faculty and staff also received sharp looking jackets featuring the logo.

We share in congratulating the Julia Bancroft team and the entire Auburn School Department on this achievement.  Wear the jackets with pride!
