Auburn defeated The Bromfield School (Harvard) 2-1 on Friday in the MIAA Central Division 2 quarterfinal, and they face Quaboag in the semi-final tonight at 5:30pm in Grafton. When Jackie Clark scored the Rockets’ first goal 3 minutes in, the goalie and defenders from Harvard looked shell-shocked. After all, the Tigers only had 11 goals scored against them all season, and they were ranked #3 with a 14-1-2 record. Kileigh Hynes had the assist.

When Auburn scored 10 minutes later, the Bromfield players were dismayed, but they had a lot of fight left in them. This goal was by Hynes with Jess Clifford assisting. For a few minutes it looked like the Rockets would walk away with an easy win, but the Tigers would have no part of that. 7 minutes later, Bromfield scored and narrowed the gap to 2-1, and that’s how the first half would end.

Bromfield had a very strong mid-field, and they routinely won when players went 1 on 1 for the ball. Their front line, however, rarely penetrated the Rocket defense, and Abby Lucas only recorded 5 saves. The second half was a non-stop battle for the ball, and both defenses put on their best show as neither team scored. When the final horn blew, the Rockets were soaring high.

Coach Bethann Cormier said, “That team is outstanding. They are better than Longmeadow.” She was referring to D1 Longmeadow that defeated Auburn 4-0 on September 19th. Cormier added, “It’s always tough to see a team lose their last game, but I’m glad it wasn’t us.” Good luck tonight ladies!
