Only one more steel delivery is due to arrive at the new middle school, and that’s early in the second week of August. By the 14th, all structural steel should be erected. The shape of the new school is more defined on a daily basis, and with the first layer of asphalt in place, the scope of the project is very apparent.

When I visited the site last Thursday, the concrete deck on the second floor of the South Academic Wing had been poured. By the time you read this story, the North Academic Wing should also have a finished surface to build upon. Bill Faneuf, the Job Superintendent for general contractor Fontaine Bros., Inc., said that with the floors poured, the pace of the construction will pick up dramatically.

A swarm of workers will descend upon the site including electricians, carpenters, ironworkers, masons, HVAC techs, laborers, plumbers, and welders. The concrete decks provide the base for all the interior and exterior walls, and the structure will develop into a building rather than a skeleton, sort of like putting meat on the bones. All of the utilities that get buried in the walls must be in place before the dry wall gets hung.

The construction is a progressive project that is starting in the South Academic Wing. As certain tasks are completed, the team that erects the walls, for instance, will move to the North Wing, and then to the center, etc. The steel was erected in the same sequence, and the last part will be the cafatorium in the southeast quadrant.

According to Mr. Faneuf, the project is on time, and all the sub-contractors have committed to having all the work done in about a year when the moves for the fall 2015 school year need to take place. Auburn Mass Daily will keep our readers and Auburn taxpayers informed as things progress.
