Coming from another assignment, I saw about six minutes of last night’s basketball game, but what I saw was intense. Auburn defeated Douglas 31-28, and the low score tells a great story about great defense by both teams in the semi-final game of the summer basketball program.
Millbury beat Quaboag 29-28 in the other semi-final, and tonight at 7pm, Auburn will face neighboring Millbury in what is expected to be a tough matchup.
Coach Nathalie Khafaga described the game as a “defensive battle” as the Rockets “tried to lock them down.” With a nice three-point shot, Douglas took a 1-point lead with less than 2 minutes to go. A foul put Emily Sarkisian at the line where she made the first shot, but missed the second. Erin Burke grabbed the rebound and sealed the game for Auburn.
Millbury beat Auburn earlier this summer, and the Rockets don’t want a repeat performance. Coach Khafaga said, “We’re out for blood.” She expects this to be a very emotional game against what has become a major rival in high school sports. We wish the Auburn Girls the best tonight and will provide full coverage of the game.
