Summer must be here.  The 2014 Summer in the Park concert series at the Pappas Recreation Complex opens this Thursday, June 12 at 6pm.

The first performance of the season is the Greater Auburn Community Chorus under the direction of Auburn High School music director, Charles Pietrello.  Weather has not been kind to GACC the past couple seasons, with two scheduled performance called off due to rain.  The five day forecast right now calls for very comfortable temperatures and almost no chance of rain.  So here’s to hoping we get to hear the GACC this time!

One of the changes for this 2014 season is that rain dates have been built into the schedule.  Should a concert have to be postponed due to weather, it will be held on the following Tuesday from 6pm to 8pm  So in case something crazy does happen weather-wise on Thursday, the GACC would perform Tuesday, June 17.

This year’s series is being sponsored by Southbridge Credit Union, Allied Waste Services, and Polar Beverages.  Their generous support allows Auburn to offer a ten concert schedule running June 12 through August 28.

Returning to the Riley-Pappas Pavilion this year is the Auburn Community Players. ACP will be performing Schoolhouse Rock, a musical adaptation of the award-winning 1970’s Saturday morning cartoon series.  This show is part of ACP’s grades 8-12 summer youth theater program.  There will be two performances; July 31 and August 1, both at 6pm.

Also returning are the Outriggers, the popular classic rock cover band that has performed here each of the last two years to sizeable crowds.  The Outriggers take the stage next Thursday, June 19.

Among the new additions to this year’s lineup is Beatles for Sale, a popular Beatles tribute band.  According to coordinator Ken Fairbanks, there have been numerous requests from concertgoers for a Beatles cover group, and he’s happy to deliver this season.

The concert series, begun in 2012 shortly after the Pappas recreation Complex grand opening, has steadily grown into a great community social event.  This should be another great summer of music and friends, with a few special events thrown in along the way.  Stay tuned!
