Boys tennis started the afternoon with a match against visiting D1 St. John’s, and the Shrewsbury team played some amazing tennis. They won 5-0 and claimed all the sets as well. The visitors totaled 60 game wins to Auburn’s 12.
Still, St. John’s is only 4-5 in their own league while Auburn is 7-2. The only Rockets losses have been to D1 Tantasqua and St. John’s. Auburn is in first place in SWCL Central.
On the other side of the fence, the Rockets were slugging it out with Nipmuc baseball. Auburn held on to a lead at the end of five innings, but #7 proved to be too much, and they fell 6-5.
The Rockets put up the first points in the game and were ahead 2-0 after the second inning. The Warriors answered with three runs in the top of the third while Auburn batted in three of their own to claim a 5-3 lead that held until the seventh.
Nipmuc hits three singles and loaded the bases before their batter was walked to make it 5-4. A sacrifice fly to right field tied the game, 5-5, and another single gave the Warriors a 6-5 lead. Ryan Kozlowski made a catch in center field to end the Nimpuc assault.
David Ljudggren hit a single in the bottom of the seventh and then stole second. He was waved past third after a hit by Ryan Mulcahy, but he was tagged while sliding into home. With this tying opportunity blown, the Rockets couldn’t muster enough to win.
The Rockets are 6-5 on the season and are tied with Shepherd Hill for first in SWCL Central.
