…and batting, and volleying, and driving
By John Anderson
When I walked down the sidewalk to the Auburn High athletic fields last Wednesday, there was activity all around. The JV softball and baseball games had started, and boys tennis was warming up on the courts.
I decided to walk over to the softball field first. By the time I got there, the Rockets already had points on the board, and things weren’t looking good for Southbridge. This game would end 24-0 after 4 innings.
My next stop was the baseball diamond, and the boys had an impressive lead, and the game would also be called after 4 innings, 18-0. The Rockets graciously allowed an extra at-bat for the visiting Pioneers. Unlike most media outlets, Auburn Mass Daily will report on Junior Varsity games if results and information are submitted.

When I left baseball, the tennis matches were complete and Auburn claimed victory over Southbridge, 4-1. The boys won their season opener the prior day over Grafton, 5-0. On Friday, they defeated Burncoat, 5-0.
Coach Pat Dufour summed up Friday’s match, “Albert and Dom Smreczak both remain undefeated on the season. Sophomore Dave Klett got a hard-fought victory in 3 sets in his first ever match. Jack Leger and Connor Aubuchont were able to get a victory at first doubles while Ryan Nurse and Matt Contois got a win at second doubles in their first action this year.”
Wednesday’s away games were equally successful for the Rockets. Girls varsity softball crushed Southbridge 18-3 while boys baseball was postponed due to field conditions. Baseball lost their opener on Friday at Grafton, 11-6, while softball won at Westborough, 7-4.
Girls tennis defeated Southbridge on Wednesday, 5-0, after a 5-0 win over Grafton on Tuesday. They won at Burncoat on Friday, 5-0.
