John McDonough’s Pumpernickel Puppets has been delighting audiences for over 30 years.  The streak continued Friday night at Pakachoag Church, part of their Family Fun Friday series.

“It was SO funny” exclaimed Zach, one of the young audience members.  “Soooo cool” echoed Joshua.

McDonough is an award-winning puppeteer.  His shows are seen regularly around the area at schools, libraries, birthday parties and numerous other venues.  All of his puppets are hand-made in his workshop.

One of the more popular and creative aspects of McDonough’s show is when he gives his audience a behind the scenes look.  Bringing some of his puppets out for the children to see up close helps them understand they are make believe. He also peels the draping away from his stage, showing the audience where he performs, and demonstrating how he uses his hands to control the puppets.

“Sometimes puppets scare children” says McDonough.  “The close up both before and after the show lets them realize it’s pretend.  It’s all fun.”
